They all report against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgoals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The SDGs are becoming the common DNA of business, government and civil society around the world. But what are the SDGs? And how can your organisation add the SDGs to its genetic make-up?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SDGs represent a collective hope for a better future. Adopted by 193 countries in 2015, the SDGs set out 17 global goals that together sketch a shared blueprint for action on sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>These Global Goals call for worldwide action among governments, businesses and civil society to end poverty and create a life of dignity and opportunity for all, within the biophysical boundaries of the planet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the evolutionary imperative?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world is changing. It is necessary for businesses to adapt. Society expects companies to be socially conscious citizens of the world \u2013 69% of Australian employees agree that businesses should care about their social impact as much as their financial performance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/dam\/jcr:f6042f00-801c-40c7-9873-8646165402ad\/return-on-action-aus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Australian Return on Action Report<\/em><\/a>, Atlassian-PwC). Companies that fail to evolve will fight an uphill battle against communal scrutiny, risking a loss of their social licence to operate and facing costly regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The imperative isn\u2019t only driven by downside risk. There\u2019s also an abundance of opportunity. The SDGs are anticipated to generate at least $12 trillion worth of market opportunities by 2030 \u2013 according to the Business and Sustainable Development Commission\u2019s <em>Better Business, Better World<\/em> report. Responsible investment is a growing pool of capital that companies can access with the SDG\u2019s underpinning investors\u2019 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations (see more on this in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unpri.org\/sdgs\/the-sdg-investment-case\/303.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The SDG Investment Case<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Principles for Responsible Investment-PwC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I incorporate the SDGs into my company\u2019s DNA?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Understand the SDGs<br \/>\n<\/strong>The 17 global goals, accompanied by 169 targets, can be overwhelming at first. Familiarising yourself with the SDGs is the first step in incorporating them. The official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgoals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Goals website<\/a> is a great resource to drill into each goal and target.The SDGs are a holistic framework for change. Goals can\u2019t be looked at in isolation. Understand that progress against one goal can positively and negatively contribute to another. The International Science Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/publications\/a-guide-to-sdg-interactions-from-science-to-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Guide to SDGs Interactions<\/em><\/a> demonstrates the complexity of these interactions.Looking to other global sustainability instruments can help deepen your understanding of the SDGs. You\u2019ll be able to find even more guidance from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/what-is-gc\/mission\/principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Global Compact Principles<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/un-guiding-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Define your company\u2019s priority SDGs<br \/>\n<\/strong>To determine your priorities, you will need to look at both a) where your largest negative impacts are in your value chain and b) where the greatest opportunities lie to make a positive contribution based on your core competencies. Use the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=sdg+compass+guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> SDG Compass<\/a> to help inform your analysis.Consider where these impacts and contributions occur in your value chain, and the level of control and influence you have over those parts of the chain.<br \/>\nMost importantly, open a dialogue with your stakeholders \u2013 those impacted by your operation, experts, and those within your organisation. Stakeholder engagement underpins principled prioritisation. By listening to a wide net of voices, what\u2019s important to your business will become clear. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=3&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjo65bP4J7oAhXrzTgGHbwWAIQQFjACegQIDBAE&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.accountability.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F10%2FAA1000SES_2015.pdf&amp;usg=AOvVaw0a8TCracBHC1sTQUlYMOM1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AA1000 <em>Stakeholder Engagement Standards<\/em><\/a> set the bar for best practice stakeholder engagement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set goals<br \/>\n<\/strong>Business goals, with appropriate measures, provide direction to your company and clearly communicate your sustainability commitment to the wider world.It can be tempting to focus on what can be achieved right now. Don\u2019t. This can limit your aspiration and leave stakeholders dissatisfied. Take an \u2018outside-in approach\u2019, listen to stakeholders, look to existing guidelines and talk to experts outside your organisation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiQxcPk4J7oAhUUxzgGHX1BD9wQFjAAegQIBxAC&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fsciencebasedtargets.org%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1xohPYDUBQbHnBjllMafEi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science-Based Targets<\/a> initiative and <a href=\"https:\/\/futurefitbusiness.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future-Fit benchmarks<\/a> are external science-based initiatives that can calibrate your goal setting to societal needs.Take the plunge and make your commitment public. You\u2019ll inspire your people and impress your audience. It\u2019s the beginning of splicing the SDGs into your DNA.<br \/>\n<u><\/u><\/li>\n<li><strong>Take action<br \/>\n<\/strong>With goals in place, your organisation is ready to take action. Empower the sustainability leaders and champions in your company. If you look, these champions are easy to find.Take inspiration from peers by looking at case studies found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdgfund.org\/case-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and seek guidance from the UN Global Compact\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=7&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjrif_54J7oAhU8xDgGHf7JDEsQFjAGegQIBhAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.unglobalcompact.org%2Flibrary%2F5361&amp;usg=AOvVaw0MeS5EQUYt6YR_wQkg7cLq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Business Reporting on SDGs: Analysis and Targets <\/em>report<\/a> which sets out recommended business actions to achieve each of the 169 targets.You might find that doing this work is a little unfamiliar. Collaborating and partnering with other companies or NGOs can help build your SDGs competencies, grow your expertise and extend your network.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll also want to set up ways to collect data and evaluate your programs against your goals and indicators for the next step.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Report progress and evaluate<br \/>\n<\/strong>The first step to reporting is figuring out what you will report on \u2013 your material topics. Best practice is to conduct a materiality assessment based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=8&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiH-JKI4Z7oAhWYzTgGHWzVCJoQFjAHegQIDBAG&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.globalreporting.org%2Fstandards%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw2vwg6dtbP-8rNmQ4RklWOn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GRI Standards<\/a> that looks at the significance of your impacts, and the influence each topic has on stakeholder decision making.The aim is to communicate your progress (or lack of progress) against your goals to your stakeholders. Transparency and honesty are scary but are critical to good reporting. Sharing your successes alongside your failures builds trust in your actions and what you say. Don\u2019t let perfection be the enemy of progress \u2013 your stakeholders don\u2019t expect 100%, they mostly want to see progress of some kind.<br \/>\nReporting will also help your organisation evaluate its programs and make the necessary tweaks to achieve your set goals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s no perfect science<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Integrating the SDGs into your company can seem like a big undertaking, but the task is smaller when you take one step at a time.
